Ubisoft is the one company that knows these events are supposed to be fun, so while they are sometimes mediocre in terms of content, the presentation itself is never boring. This year was no different as they opened the show with a marching band whose drum major was a panda to introduce the new Just Dance game. The energy from this segment carried through the rest of the show as there was never a moment where I regretted watching the press conference.
Below is my breakdown of the good, the bad and the AMAZING of the Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference.
Good
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
After a two-year break between Syndicate and Origins, Ubisoft has decided to revert to a yearly release with the Ancient Greece-focused, Odyssey. While there aren’t many changes from the content of Origins, the ones they made are significant and made me very excited for a return to Assassin’s Creed. The ability to play the entire game as a female assassin is something the feels like it should have been done much sooner, but I’m glad it is finally here.
Beyond Good And Evil 2
There was no game at the show that has a better boom-or-bust chance than Beyond Good and Evil 2. The visuals in the cutscenes are amazing and the setting is jaw-dropping, but without seeing any actual long stretch of gameplay, I will reserve my judgement until I see the real video game and not a vertical slice. Needless to say, it has my attention.
Skull And Bones
One of my favorite parts of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was the ship combat despite how bare bones it was at the time. Skull and Bones takes that concept and built a full game around it that looks amazing. Realistic ship combat is something that I have wanted for a long time, and it looks like this is closest that a game has gotten. The only thing I did not see that I would love to have is the ability to control everyone on my ship in an XCOM-style of strategy. I will keep my fingers crossed.
Bad
Transference
If there was a game that I know less about than Death Stranding, it is Transference. Outside of Elijah Wood’s involvement, I can’t figure out what this VR game is about. If I take it as a direct rip from the defination of the word transference, then I’m as confused as ever. This game has a very high bust percentage.
AMAZING
Dan Ryckert Doesn’t Know What Pirates Do
Honestly, just watch this. It is amazing that he’s a college graduate.
