Synopsis: A wealthy family’s get-together is interrupted by a group of sadistic home invaders.
I haven’t been following the horror genre all that closely in the past few years. I think each movie is more or less the same and not much seems to interest me. However, I’ve decided to give some new stuff a try this month, and movies like You’re Next are nice surprises when I come across them.
At first, I thought this was going to be a rehash of The Strangers, and I guess home invasion movies can only be so dissimilar. I mean, there’s not much different between these movies and Panic Room if you get right down to it. This film though is a tale of two halves, and while the first half is creepy and unnerving, the second half is a quality survivalist action movie, complete with an awesome final girl in Sharni Vinson.
While I’d say this movie could be broken up into two different movies, each half has its share of gore. People are hacked, shot with arrows, sliced, diced and everything else you can think of. The blood flows the red wine in this one.
GORE RATING: 5 out of 5
This movie is only scary if you’re unsettled by home invasion movies, which I do find fairly creepy. Once the second half hits, though, there aren’t really any scares to be had, just a good time.
SCARE RATING: 3 out of 5
We get an early, very quick, sex scene in the opening scene of the film, but that’s about it.
Sex/Nudity Rating: 1.5 out of 5
OVERALL
I really enjoyed this movie. I’m not a devout fan of this new generation of horror, but this one I would suggest to anyone that enjoyed The Strangers or is just looking for a taut action horror movie. Plus, Sharni Vinson kicks all kinds of ass.
