Welcome Back! I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since our Horror month, but here we are: October again. If you’ve been following the site since then, you may remember that I revisited old episodes of the 90s kids’ show Goosebumps every Thursday. So let’s do this month right by keeping with tradition.
The Return of the Mummy
Ugh. That’s about what I can say about this episode. I almost decided to pull a mulligan and just move along, but I watched it, so I might as well right about it. This is definitely one of those books I never wound up reading, but I definitely had it.
It’s kind of weird that they decided to adapt this into an episode, but not the first book of the mummy series, The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb. Either way, this is a pretty uninteresting story and a poorly acted episode.
The plot is painfully stock, both for your standard mummy story and for a Goosebumps story. Gabe accompanies his uncle, an archaeologist, and his cousin Sari into a pyramid where they hope to unearth the mummy of Prince Khor-ru, but most of the runtime is devoted to Gabe getting scared by everything, including his cousin. Once again, a younger female relative is the aggressor in the relationship, much like how we saw things transpire in “The Cuckoo Clock of Doom”. I swear, I thought Sari was going to call him a krej. I’m starting to think RL Stine had a problem with a bratty younger sister or something.
Gabe and Sari accidentally find themselves trapped behind a wall that reveals the tomb of Khor-ru and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a mummy there left to terrorize them. I’d go into more details, but it’s all just sooooo boring. Skip to the next episode on the Netflix queue. It’s “Night of the Living Dummy II”. Much better.
